Episode 008: COVID Opportunities Meditation for Massage Therapists

It may seem crazy to think that COVID has presented opportunities, yet, if we have the courage to explore we will find many.

Here is the transcript from this meditation.

Today let’s explore the opportunities COVID has created in your world. Is it hard to believe that positive changes could come from such a destructive virus? Please, open your mind to the idea that change is good and that in the midst of all this craziness, new possibilities are waiting.

Hello and welcome, I am Ali Boehm of The Massage Business Mama. I want to invite you to join me today as we explore new and might I suggest better ways of doing business.

Take a moment to make yourself comfortable. Either lying down or sitting in a chair. Settle into a straight spine. Think about creating space between each of your vertebra. Uncross your arms and legs, and begin to focus on your breathing. As you inhale, close your eyes and open your mind to new possibilities.

Focus on your exhale as you let go of this moment and move on to the next.

As you continue to focus on your exhales, let go of all of the tension in your body.

Breathe deeply as you retreat into stillness. A place where you might find answers to questions you didn’t even know you had.

Think about your life and your massage practice before this pandemic arrived at your doorstep.

Were you putting your basic needs at the bottom of the “To Do” list?

Were you stretched just a little too thin?

What changes can you make to have more peace and renewal in your life?

Take a deep inhale and breathe in restoration.

Breathe in a new, replenished life force.

Honor this time for internal quest.

Retreat to a place where you can be replenished.

Explore your potential.

Embrace change.

Breathe in deeply as you fearlessly face the unknown.

Let go of fears that appear as obstacles or barriers.

Embrace the unknown and flow with the mystery that is unfolding in your life.

The next step may be leaping empty-handed into the void with implicit trust.

In the stillness of that void, disallow interruptions, and go deeper into your own self-discovery and healing process.

Leap bravely into the shadows.

And breathe. Concentrate on filling every inch of your body with life-promoting breath.

You have all the tools you need to move forward.

You are creative and resourceful.

Just around the corner, new opportunity awaits.

Now breathe out. Exhale any fear you have.

Think about how you want your future to look.

How do you want your time to look moving forward?

In what ways have your priorities shifted during this pandemic?

What picture do you want to paint for your new reality?

What color or colors comes to mind as you paint this picture?

Let that color trickle down from your head. Infiltrate your sternum and leak out to your arms, down through your torso, around your quads and hammies, all the way through your calves, and finally to your toes. Let the color fill your being as you feel the warmth of this new reality.

Exhale. Let go and soften deeper and deeper still.

Breathe in your talents – breathe in your experience – breathe in the tools you have accumulated over the years that will serve you well in your future.

Release your hold on the past.

Notice the feeling in your body from letting go. Take a moment to enjoy this sensation.

Be open to new ideas, to new ways of doing business, and to a new reality.

Continue to breathe fully, focus on the exhale, and welcome this whole experience with acceptance.

Let feelings of self-love and possibility move into the space you have created.

And now allow yourself to go just a little deeper still.

Inhale deeply.

Open your mind to new possibilities.

Enjoy the colorful space you have created today.

Take some time now to rest in your newfound awareness.

Notice any changes you feel in your body. Be with these sensations.

When you are ready, slowly begin to bring your consciousness back to the room and the space around you. Take the next few breathes to thank yourself for coming today, for honoring your past, and exploring a new reality moving forward.

Come back to this meditation as often as you need. Remember that this is a practice. Thank you so much for allowing my guidance and practicing with me today. I hope you experience light and love today and every day.

Have you ever gotten a bad review online? It can Have you ever gotten a bad review online?

It can feel awful, especially when you know you did nothing to deserve such negativity.

BUT...it's not all for not!

Client reviews are HUGE for SEO ranking. The more reviews you have, the higher you rank. Even better, even if those reviews aren't 5-star reviews, they still help our web presence gain traction. Pretty cool, huh? Even the bad reviews help us out! Obviously, a good review is better, but I'll bet you never thought that a bad review could actually do something good for you.

Setting rates is a tricky thing. One that is easy Setting rates is a tricky thing. One that is easy to lament!

Charge too little, and you will be in the poor house. Charge too much, and you risk pricing yourself out of the market.

BUT it is important to note that often people perceive those with lesser prices as less than therapists. Charging a higher price might actually make you more appealing.

😳

“Oh, they charge a lot, they must be good!”

😳

In her work as a money coach, Mikelann Valterra talks about the concept of 'noble poverty.' This is basically the concept that having money is a negative thing, the root of all evil.

In my experience, massage therapists are particularly susceptible to this mindset. We are giving by nature. We want to help as many people as possible. Yet if we aren't taking care of ourselves, and yes, that means financially, we won't have enough reserves in our tanks to take care of those around us, including our massage clients.

There is nothing noble about neglecting your needs. You are simply neglecting your needs.

So... Price yourself just a touch higher than you feel comfortable! It is so much easier to offer discounts than to increase your price once it has been established.

Are you looking to find a new massage office? On Are you looking to find a new massage office?

One of the most exciting things when you are getting started building a massage business is finding an office! Envisioning the possibility each space represents is FUN!

What colors to decorate with, how to layout the room, where you will check clients in and out... this is where your business really begins to come to life!

BUT, it is important NOT to get swept away by any one element of a location and instead factor in all the important considerations. Such as:

🖤Neighbors

Getting naked can be a stressful thing for some of Getting naked can be a stressful thing for some of our massage clients!

As comfortable as we are with nudity, it is crucial to remember that it can be a stressful occurrence for some to take off their clothes. Maybe due to poor body image, a history of trauma, or they may just be extremely modest –whatever the reason, it is important that we are sensitive to this reality!

I recently received an email from a friend illustrating my point.

“Usually, I get a massage in the middle of my workday. During the summer, sometimes my feet get a little sweaty, and I’m always worried that they will smell during my massage! Do people clean their feet with wet wipes or something before a massage or just not worry about it?”

This email got me thinking. Many of our clients have questions such as these, how can we help them feel more at ease before they even enter our establishment? How do they know that we don’t even notice their unshaven legs, sweaty feet, or dry elbows?

One answer, a clearly written “what to expect” section, either on your website or in a welcome email.

If we can help our clients know what to expect when they come for their massage, they can stop fretting about the unknown and begin to relax before ever setting foot through our doors.

Do you have a “what to expect” section on your website? Please share in the comments!
