EPISODE 024: Dual Relationships in Massage

Have you ever had a massage client turn into more than just a client? Or had a friend turn into a massage client? If so, you have had a dual relationship. Dual relationships can be tricky!

A hot topic in the massage industry is dual relationships! While some believe these types of relationships have no place in the massage world, others think they can be a healthy part of business.

In an ideal world, this wouldn’t be something we need to worry about – but the truth is, for many therapists, they don’t have this luxury. Maybe they live in a small town, or they didn’t establish healthy boundaries when they first began their practice – whatever the reason that dual relationships were created, figuring out healthy ways to navigate them is paramount!

In the latest episode of “Align with The Massage Business Mama,” Beca and Ali dig into dual relationships. Whether they are good or bad and how to handle them when they do occur. And trust me, they have some interesting stories to share about their own experiences with these types of relationships.

They give their top tips on how to create POSITIVE, Functional Dual relationships when they do occur:

  1. BE CLEAR ABOUT YOUR BOUNDARIES AND STATE THEM AT THE BEGINNING OF YOUR SESSION. EVERYTIME!
  2. BE CLEAR ON WHAT POPULATIONS YOU ARE AND ARE NOT COMFORTABLE WORKING WITH.
  3. BE CLEAR ON WHAT YOUR PROFESSIONAL VALUES ARE IN YOUR PRACTICE.
  4. CONSTANTLY DO SELF-ASSESSMENT.

Their hope is this episode gives you the tools necessary to develop healthy dual relationships or the freedom to choose that dual relationships aren’t for you.
